I am hosting another tech night in my garage on Tuesday, December 14 at 6:30 p.m. I hope this isn't too short of notice.
Itinerary:
Ebay Bobber
Since the last meeting, I have taken the top end off both engines. I am looking for feedback and comments on which parts to interchange to create the Borg 350 (two Honda CB350s assimilated into one). I will need feedback on the cylinder/piston/ring measurements, so if anyone has any special measuring tools, I would be grateful.
IT400 drag bike
I have not done much actual work. I did buy software to help me design my own expansion chamber. The software requires bits of information which I do not have. Specifically, it requires the port sizes and shapes, and the number of degrees of rotation that the ports are open. This requires a degree wheel. Does anyone have one? Does anyone have one of those gizmos you insert in the top of your engine to identify top dead centre (there probably are markings inside the cases, but I have not got that far yet). If so, could you let me know and bring it along.
Both of these tasks would be very interesting for those of us who have not done a lot of internal engine work. Some of our members have a lot of knowledge, and this could be a great learning experience for the rest of us.
See you there.

I have a dial gauge to determine TDC. I can bring it along.
I live with fear and danger everyday, but sometimes I leave her at home and go motorcycling.

Tech night at your place sounds good Dennis. I hope to pick up a few pointers and get an engine education in the process myself. Looking forward to being there. Will it be the usual or maybe unusual time?

Are you interested in 2 into 1 pipes for a 350 honda, I have a set that are for sale. Not sure how they fit re. pegs etc. I got them from 754 to try out but haven't got into that part of the shed yet. Bit chilly in that part, also crowded. He wants $80.00 for them and has another set just like them, no muffler just 2 pipes coming to 1 on the right side bottom.

My bore gauge would only
just
go small enough for a 300cc BMW cylinder, so I don't think it will do your Honda. I'll bet one of your manuals has a degree wheel in the back; copy it, print it as a sticker, and put it on an old LP or piece of cardboard or aluminium and instant degree wheel. I have one, anyway. Attaching them to cranks always takes some fiddling or light fabbing. As long as Jeff is there, you won't need any measuring tools: he has just had his eyeballs and fingertips re-calibrated.
Hans, is that a two-stroke style dial guage, with a threaded mount?

No just one with a magnetic mount. I don't bother with the magnetic part, the mount arm jams nicely into the head fins and holds it steady. Not sure hoe it would work going into a 4 stroke at an angle though.

For a four-stroke you just tape a piece of wire to the needle; bend it as you need to to get a straight rise. Works fine. I used to have a nice threaded adapter with a small-shank dial indicator, but I got parted from it at some point. Anyway, I don't think there is much measuring to be done on Dennis' bikes; the parts will be good enough or clearly not. He can't swap reciprocating parts, and he can't re-use the parts from the malfunctioning tensioner, so the 'good' parts should be self-evident. And Jeff will be there to address any imponderables.

Thanks for the help from those who attended. Jeff made my day after he took one look at my cylinder barrels and declared them fit for service. Same with the head ... if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I'm glad he is not an aircraft mechanic.
I hope we didn't scare off our new member Steve with the K100 BMW. Put him to work right away scraping old gaskets of the engine case. Guy put the pressure on him to host a tech night so we can work on his Beemer's front end.
