New (home made) bike lift
« on: January 09, 2025, 03:14:55 PM »
I finally got my new bike lift finished and painted.  Unfortunately POR 15 colored paint has been taken off the market (my favorite paint for this application-- because it's highly resistant to brake fluid and engine oil).  Probably some idiot tried to drink it to get high.  So instead I used old fashioned enamel that's stinky and took a week to cure.

The lift is more compact and lighter than the Princess Auto style lifts.  The lifting device is a boat trailer winch which is not quite as elegant as the hydraulics on the store bought lifts.  The project did provide lots of TIG welding practice though.

looks great!  My only regret with the PA lifts is the amount of space required to work with it. This one looks compact and light.

Who do I write to for an order for 2 of them?
Why be normal?

I started by trying to buy a Solo motorcycle lift--exactly because the Princess Auto-Harbor Freight style lifts are very big.  I first saw a Solo lift at the fesival of Jurby on the Isle of Man when I was there in 2018.  All the riders there had Solo lifts that they just pulled out of their vans. https://www.solomotorcycleproducts.com/wordpress/index.php/bikestand/

But The issue with Solo was that there is no distributor in North America so freight from England would have been unfortunate.  (they are looking for someone who wants to be a distributor--you need ~$100k to buy stock and they get on the trade show circuit).  Fortunately they published their specs on their website and the photos were good too so I was able to figure out the rest on my own.
