Gas tank liner questions

Two questions about tank liners.

1) Do fellows recommend applying a liner to the inside of an old tank before getting the tank repainted? With the tank inside of my 1972 GT750J rusted, I'd hate to find a pinhole leak after paying a bunch to get the tank painted--and then try to line the tank.

2) Does anyone have longer term experience with gas tank liners? In other words, can anyone comment on the performance of a tank liner product that was applied 5 or even 10 years ago? (My experience is that all new paints are pliable and have good adhesion. After a few years of service--not so much!). For me, the real litmus test would be the integrity and adhesion of a liner after several years.

Ask Hans how the tank liner is on his SRX, I had it done at a rad shop in PG before I had it painted. I know they did some mods to it in order to do it but it looked like it was well done. Don?t remember what I paid but if it?s still holding up then it was money well spent.

It's still holding together.  I've had the bike 4 years now, not sure when Bob had the lining done before that.  That bike gets Chevron 94 with no alcohol since I've had it.

Definitely get it lined before painting ... as per Fast 1's recollection. 

I used the POR product and it worked well.  In the past I have used Kreem (or something like that ... it used to be the standard).  I also went to a radiator shop once and they will only line a tank that is going to be painted.  The fellow said he cannot guarantee that he won't scratch the paint during the process.

With most coatings/paint/adhesives, two part products are going to be better.  Otherwise, you are just waiting for solvent to evaporate, and I figure if solvent can evaporate out, gasoline and sneak in.
